Librarian and barbarian working draft part 1

The Barbarian and the Librarian (Working Title)

By K.Walther Lange

The sun shown on a large palatial looking building in the city state of Kartoffen.

A young blonde fox woman dressed in a tunic and leather armor was approaching the large doors, with shadows close behind her.

As she walked up into the shade of  the steps a guardswoman stepped forward with a spear and blocked the young swordswoman's path rather pointedly.

“Hold, your kind isn’t welcome here!” said the face behind the spear.

”I was told this was a public place.” replied the swordswoman.

“Not for some dregg too low to even be a tavern harlot, sellsword.” scoffed the guardswoman.

Understanding the tone of the proud guardswoman she turned her attention to the guardsman who was standing nonchalantly by the door, looking embarrassed.

“Is that the official policy?” the swordswoman asked.

“S’ry mam, my mum taught me not to argue with strong ladies, s’pecily if they is holding a spear.”

“Hah go look elsewhere, cretin, maybe you might make a good doxxie for a pirate!” scoffed the guardswoman.

“Oh course"  said the Guardsman, “S’fif you really want policy you should ask the boss.”

“I see..” said the Sellsword looking over her options when the Guardsman suddenly sprang to attention.

“Oy! Speak of it!  Hey Alice! Look sharp the old man’s coming!”

An old wizened sage, who smelled a bit like onions, was walking up to the building.

“Ah! Good , burp, morning Alice, Fred on duty as always.” said the Old Sage turning to our heroine.

“Ah! I see we have a new visitor, Welcome young lady to Grand Library of Kartoffen!”

“Sir! She’s just some sellsword…” protested Alice

“Ah! So she must have some important business then, we are always happy to help people, we are a public institution after all.” said the sage “Learning is a two way street, we can learn from questions just as much as our patrons can learn from our answers.”

Said the Sage.

“Thank you sir!” said the sellsword, giving a slight look to the snobbish Alice.

“No trouble at all, miss?”

“Iona.” she replied.

“Ah nice name, now let’s go see if we can find a librarian to assist you.”

The pair entered the library, it was like a temple to knowledge and literature and filled with stacks and floors of books as well as spaces to read them. The lamps were strong and multiple, powered by magic, casting many shadows that made one unsure who they belonged to.

“So what brings you here miss?”

Iona removed a parchment from her pouch.

“I found a stone in the northern value and I believe it leads to something but I cannot make out the language, for all I know it’s a recipe for cookies.”

“Hmm, looks to me like 3rd dynasty Wirlich, I can’t read it myself, but I believe we have a book that will *burp*, excuse me, help, I just need to find Roberto.”

The pair proceed to wander towards another section of the libraries as the shadows moved along with them.

“Here he is, Roberto!” said the sage

In front of them was a skinny looking elderly gentleman wo looked like the wind would blow him over. Behind the patron however was a young man carrying a heavy tome.

“Here you are Mr.Archok, this book on gardening may be of use to you.” said the young man.

He handed the book to skinny Mr.Archok who walked off with absolutely no trouble lifting the heavy tome at all.
